Rex Ryan

Rex trained at The Gaiety School of Acting, Dublin. He was recently seen in the role of Oscar in BRON Studios Western THAT DIRTY BLACK BAG. He is currently filming the role of Dave Duggan in Shinawil series BORDERLINE. He is recently completed filming the role of El Cazador in the Second Season of Acorn TV's HARRY WILD.

Recent Glass Mask Theatre stage credits include, Darragh in OUR SHAMAN OF DUBLIN 1 written and directed by Rex.

 

Rex was nominated best Actor twice in 2020/2021 by Broadway World for his roles in TONIGHT WITH DONNY STIXX at the Abbey Theatre and QUICKSAND at The New Theatre.

He also wrote and directed his first short movie, FUNERAL SONG, funded by Screen Ireland that was featured at the 2021 Galway Film Fleadh. He was nominated for Best Actor at the Richard Harris International Film Festival for the same short.

Rex recently opened a new writing theatre in the heart of Dublin city featuring the work of emerging and established Irish playwrights. He is Artistic Director. He performed in 3 of the first four plays of season 1; ONE HOUR TO RON MONTANA ‘Ryan is a Singular Performer’ Sunday Times  And SUMMERHILL by Stephen Jones. (‘ An Excellent Rex Ryan ‘ The Sunday Times). He also wrote and starred in POPTART LIPSTICK (His debut play - ‘A terrific play- IRISH INDEPENDENT ‘ - New York tour 2024) and OUR SHAMAN OF DUBLIN 1 ‘An Hour of Superhuman verbal bedlam’- Emer O’Kelly.‘ Intense, Charismatic Performance ‘ The Arts Review)

He recently performed in 2 RTE radio Dramas to re open radio drama on RTE .

  

​Other recent theatre credits include, BULLFIGHT ON THIRD AVENUE by Eddie Naughton, QUICKSAND by Elizabeth Moynihan at the New Theatre, Philip Ridley's TONIGHT WITH DONNY STIXX directed by Karl Shiels at the Peacock Theatre.,an extensive tour of PILGRIM by Philip Doherty (Manchester Theatre Awards Best Actor Nomination), the title role in HAMLET directed by Peter Reid at the New Theatre, PORT AUTHORITY by Conor McPherson at the Viking Theatre, THE MEMORY STICK by Donal O'Kelly, BUG by Tracy Letts for The Corps Ensemble, Mark O’Rowe’s MADE IN CHINA at The Viking Theatre with The Corps Ensemble, James Joyce in The musical MAGISTORIUM, HOLLOW GROUND directed by Karl Shiels for Theatre Upstairs, THE MOTHERFUCKER WITH THE HAT directed by Aoife Spillane Hinks for The New Theatre THE CIRCUS OF PERSEVERANCE written and directed by Philip Doherty at Smock Alley Theatre and THE BIRTHDAY MAN by Philip Doherty for which he received a Best Actor Award nomination in the 2013 Dublin Fringe.

Screen Credits include QUANTICO for ABC America, MONGED by Gary Duggan, commissioned by Film Base and the award winning short SOLITAIRE by Gerard Walsh. 

Rex was recently nominated Best Actor at the Richard Harris International Film Festival for his performance in WAITING.


Rex has directed numerous new plays by renowned writers such as Deirdre Kinahan, Samuel D Hunter and Carmel Winters.

Rex is also a highly experienced voice artist working with  RTE Radio One on poetry readings and dramas for radio. He is the recent voice of the Ireland under 20’s Rugby television campaign.
